Using circular motions to remove a spot destroys the carpet$%:s texture. Carpet manufacturers advise using cleaning solutions and patting the area dry. Depending on what caused your spot, choose a cleaning solution designed for that stain and clean the area. As a final step, rinse the spot with clear water, blot dry and put a thickness of several white paper towels over the damp area. Add some weight on top of the towels to optimize absorption of moisture. Once it has dried remove the weight and towels and brush up the carpet pile.
